Think about this. When you buy food from the supermarket, chances are that it has already been contaminated, not only by chemicals used to grow it, but also the packaging it's in.

The solution is to go organic - both in terms of food and what it comes in.  At Paper Folds, we have specially created handmade paper range from cotton rags, for the packaging of organic food.

Our endeavor has been to act as an interface between the age-old art of hand papermaking and the modern awareness of our ecology. Compared with regular papers, handmade paper has many advantages. First, it uses no artificial colours, and is therefore non-toxic. Second, it's eco-friendly twice over - it recycles waste & does not use up any wood pulp. Third, natural ingredients like agro, textile & plant fibres have been mixed with cotton rag to give texture to this paper. That is why no other media cannot match the aesthetics of recycled, handmade paper. There are various combinations one can work with in terms of colour, thickness and raw material used, to give each product an identity of its own. And fourth, we work with the most stringent norms of environmental standards, supplying to buyers in Germany . This means that the paper is checked so often for quality that the end product is, in the words of a client, “.. good enough to eat”!

Readers would notice an unmistakable synergy between organic food and handmade paper packaging. Both are natural, without additives, and conceptually very different from their mass-produced counterparts.  For organic products to distinguish themselves on department store shelves from non-organic foods, unusual packaging is an obvious solution, as it defines, partially, the ‘personality' and the saleability of the product. However, the unfortunate
reality is that usually organicand non-organic foods are very similarly packaged, and the only way they can be distinguished is if the word ‘organic' is written anywhere on the package. Which is perhaps why some discerning organic producers are beginning to use handmade paper packaging for their products. For instance, we at Paper Folds supply organic tea packaging to fair trade organizations in Europe . Lately, we have also started working with the black pepper plantations in southern part of India .

We believe that the concept of organic food packaging is all about awareness. We probably won't need to educate buyers of organic products about the importance of using any sort of recycled or environmentally safe media for packaging. After all, who would want to buy food produced with the basic idea of keeping our biodiversity intact, if it is packaged in materials that help in destroying it?
